Sophia Sokolowski, a recent graduate of Wellesley College, specializes in scientific knowledge that underlies problems affecting marine and land environments, human health, and psychology.
Her interactions with peers from 65 countries at the 2011 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair provided her with new perspectives emphasizing worldwide enhancement. Sophia spent her junior year aboard a Woods Hole scientific research vessel, collecting and analyzing the accumulation of microplastics in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean. She recently showcased her findings as a TEDxWellesleyCollege speaker and, as a Fellow of the 2016 Albright Institute for Global Affairs, she presented the universal urgency to conserve environments through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Climate Action to former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
To mirror her action at the global level, Sophia understands that change starts with the individual. The medical and educational work that Sophia and her team provided to patients in Honduras during her first year at Wellesley reinforced her fervor for enhancing communities’ prospects by enabling access to invaluable resources.
Her passion extends to the universal language of music, having performed with Opera Tampa under the direction of Maestro Anton Coppola for seven years. Sophia continues pursuing music along with her diplomatic and scientific endeavors as an Albright Fellow at the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs.
Sophia was born and raised in Tampa, Florida by her parents, both research scientists, who recently relocated to Littleton, Colorado. Her fondest memories include singing opera in the kitchen while she and her mother baked cookies and waddling around her fathers lab as a toddler which evolved into corralling newly hatched chicks when she grew older. She enjoys swimming, picnicking, and taste-testing sangria recipes with friends during the summer months. Sophia is, however, secretly awaiting the arrival of winter, since she found love at first ski run when her best friend took her to the top of a black diamond the second day of being on the slopes during their sophomore year of college.
